Kitchen Backsplash Design & Installation

Serving Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and surrounding Yavapai County communities.

A kitchen backsplash is one of the highest-impact, most cost-effective upgrades in a kitchen remodel. It protects the wall from cooking grease and moisture, and it's the design detail that ties countertops, cabinets, and flooring together. At Infinity Kitchen and Bath, we handle backsplash design and installation as both a standalone project and as part of a full kitchen remodel.

Backsplash Tile Options

The right tile depends on your kitchen style, cabinet color, and how much visual texture you want. Here are the most popular options we install in Prescott:

Subway Tile

The classic 3"x6" rectangular white tile remains the most versatile backsplash option. It works in traditional, transitional, and farmhouse kitchens, and its simple shape keeps the focus on cabinets and countertops rather than the backsplash. Variations include beveled edges, handmade/textured finishes, and non-white colors (sage green, navy, black). Subway tile runs $3–$8/sq ft for standard ceramic; premium handmade options run $12–$25+.

Large Format Tile

12"x24", 24"x24", or larger tiles create a clean, modern look with fewer grout lines. Popular in contemporary kitchens. Large format requires a very flat substrate and more precision during installation, which affects labor cost. Large format porcelain backsplash tile runs $6–$18/sq ft.

Mosaic Tile

Small tiles (1"x1", 2"x2") set on mesh backing create detailed patterns. Popular for accent areas, behind the range, or as full backsplash in eclectic and Mediterranean-influenced kitchens. Mosaic tile is labor-intensive to install — budget $15–$22/sq ft for labor on mosaic work. Materials range from $8–$40+ per sq ft.

Arabesque and Specialty Shapes

Arabesque (elongated hexagon), penny round, fish scale (scallop), and other specialty shapes add pattern interest without busy color. These are popular in transitional and bohemian kitchens. Pricing is similar to mosaic: $8–$30+ for materials, higher installation labor due to pattern matching.

Natural Stone Backsplash

Travertine, slate, limestone, and marble backsplashes bring natural texture and warmth. Popular in Southwest-influenced and rustic kitchens in Prescott. Natural stone needs sealing and more maintenance than porcelain. Material cost: $10–$30/sq ft; premium marble runs higher.

Glass Tile

Glossy glass tile reflects light and brightens a kitchen. Popular behind ranges as an accent. It requires care during installation (notched trowel, white thinset to avoid gray showing through) and specific grout. Material cost: $10–$35/sq ft.

Glass Tile$10–$35/sq ft$14–$20/sq ft$24–$55/sq ft

A typical kitchen backsplash covers 30–50 sq ft (countertop run minus outlets, windows, and upper cabinets). A standard full-kitchen subway tile backsplash installed by us runs $900–$1,800 total including materials, thinset, grout, and labor. Premium tile and larger areas run proportionally higher.

What Goes Into a Backsplash Installation

Substrate Preparation

Tile needs a flat, solid, moisture-resistant surface. Behind the range and near the sink, we ensure the wall surface is appropriate — drywall is fine for most backsplash areas; cement board may be used in high-moisture zones. Any existing paint or texture that would compromise tile adhesion is addressed before setting.

Layout Planning

We plan tile layout before cutting a single piece. Where do full tiles land? Are cuts centered? How does the pattern align with the range, windows, and upper cabinet bottoms? Layout decisions are made on paper first. A good layout is invisible — you notice a bad one.

Thinset and Setting

Tile is set in polymer-modified thinset mortar, notch-troweled to the appropriate coverage. White thinset is used under glass or light-colored tiles to prevent the gray mortar from showing through. Large format tiles require back-buttering for full coverage. Setting tile flat and in plane requires skill — an experienced tile setter is the difference between a flat, lasting installation and one that cracks or loosens.

Grout Selection and Application

Grout choice significantly affects the final look. Matching grout color to the tile produces a monolithic look; contrasting grout emphasizes the tile pattern. For kitchen backsplash, sanded grout (for joints over 1/8") or unsanded (for tight joints) is used. Epoxy grout is an option for high-stain areas and resists kitchen grease exceptionally well but costs more to install.

Standalone vs. Full Kitchen Remodel

We install backsplash as a standalone project or as part of a full kitchen remodel. Standalone backsplash installation is typically completed in 1–2 days for a standard kitchen, including demo of existing backsplash if needed, prep, tile setting, grouting, and caulking at the countertop joint. The countertop joint (where tile meets countertop) is always caulked, not grouted — grout at a transition point will crack as the two surfaces move independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to remove cabinets or countertops for a backsplash installation?

No. Backsplash tile is installed between the countertop and upper cabinets. We work around existing fixtures and appliances. If outlets are in the backsplash area, we remove outlet covers before tiling, tile around the boxes, and reinstall with extended outlet covers that sit flush with the tile surface.

How long does backsplash installation take?

A standard kitchen backsplash in subway or similar tile takes 1–2 days: Day 1 for setting tile, Day 2 for grouting after thinset cure. Large format or mosaic tile may add a day. Kitchen is accessible but we ask that the area around the countertop remain clear of items during installation.

What's the most popular backsplash in Prescott right now?

Large format white porcelain in a stacked or offset pattern remains most popular in modern and transitional kitchens. In craftsman and farmhouse kitchens, we're seeing a lot of handmade subway tile with a slight texture and color variation (creamy whites, sage, terracotta) and contrasting dark grout. Natural travertine backsplash remains popular in Southwest and Spanish-influenced homes throughout Yavapai County.

Can you match existing backsplash tile for a repair?

Sometimes. If the tile is a current stock item, we can often source a match. If it's discontinued, we work with clients to find the closest available option or to redesign the area so the repair blends. For large damage, a full backsplash replacement is often more cost-effective than a visible patch.
